Frequently Asked Questions
What can I do to help get rid of bad breath?
Good brushing and cleaning between the teeth is the most important way of controlling bad breath. In the short term, you can use mouth rinses such as CB12, sugar free gum and sugar free mints. Many of the bacteria causing bad breath live on your tongue, so brushing your tongue or using a tongue scraper will also help.
My teeth are sensitive, what can I use?
There are several toothpastes that contain ‘de-sensitising’ agents to help reduce the pain of sensitive teeth. Some people find that rubbing this toothpaste all along the affected area and leaving it on overnight helps ease the discomfort.
Can smoking affect my teeth and gums?
Smoking can make gum disease much worse. People who smoke are more likely to produce bacterial plaque which leads to gum disease. The gums are affected because smoking causes you to have less oxygen in your bloodstream, so the infected gums do not heal. Smoking causes: tooth staining, tooth loss (because of gum disease), bad breath, and in more severe cases, mouth cancer.
What are dental implants?
A dental implant is used to support one or more false teeth. It is a titanium screw that can replace the root of a tooth when it fails. Just like a tooth root, it is placed into the jawbone. Implants are a safe, well-established treatment but it’s probably true to say that implants, like natural teeth, will only last for as long as you care for them.
How well you look after your implants – and whether you go for your regular maintenance appointments – will have the biggest impact on how long they will last. If you don’t look after you implants they will develop a coating similar to what you get on neglected natural teeth. Left untreated, this can lead to gum infection, bleeding, soreness and general discomfort. If your implants are well looked after, and if the bone they are fitted to is strong and healthy, you can expect thm to last for many years. However, just as with outher surgical implants (such as a hip replacement) there is no lifetime guarantee.
Why do i need to see a dental hygienist?
Dental hygienists are specially trained to work as part of the dental team, to give care to patients. They play an important part in dental health care and are mainly concerned with preventative dental health and treating gum disease – showing you the correct home care and helping to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
The hygienists main work is to prevent and treat gum disease; including professionally cleaning your teeth by removing plaque and tartar (using called a ‘scale and polish’ or a prophylaxis). However, perhaps their most important role is showing you the best way to clean your teeth free of plaque. Plaque is a sticky coating that forms constantly on your teeth. Hygienists also give advice about diet and preventing tooth decay. The hygienist will work with your dental team to give you care that is tailored to your needs.
Do I need to tell my dentist if I have a medical condition?
When you have your first dental check up, your dental team will want to know about your medical history. You will need to tell them about any medical concerns, recent operations, allergies and any tablets / medications you are taking that may affect your dental treatment.
You may think that some conditions are not important enough to mention, however, quite often these conditions are just as important. The information will help your dentist and the dental team work together to make sure they treat you in the safest way possible and do not put you at any risk during treatment.
